CLASS INFO
Ashtanga yoga is a dynamic and physically challenging style of yoga, whereby each movement is synchronised with the breath, and a set series of poses are linked in a constant flow. This creates a detoxifying heat, and the consistency of this practice allows you to quickly improve your upper and lower body strength, flexibility and balance.
If you love routine, discipline and working hard, this is a style of yoga suited to you! All of this will be done with a sense of breath, bandha (energy lock) & dristhi (gazing point) taking the practice into a more meditive state of awareness.
This is the traditional method of learning the Astanga yoga system and is the way that it is taught at the Astanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore – hence the name ‘Mysore style’, which is often used to describe this type of class.
In a self-practice class each student works at their own pace with assistance and adjustment from the teacher as and when necessary – almost like a private lesson in a class situation. The Astanga series are learnt and committed to memory posture by posture, with new postures being added as and when the student is ready, so that most of the time the student works without being ‘led’ by a teacher.
Self-practice classes, therefore, always have students of mixed abilities working side by side and complete beginners are welcome.
Contrary to people's beliefs, a mysore class is available for total beginners also. Everyone starts somewhere! The beginner will be shown breath techniques, combined with basic movement that will begin the development of a vinyasa (breath synchronised movement) based yoga practice. From then the practitioner will slowly develop a disciplined practice.
These classes are based on the the tristhana; 3 point focus of breath, bandha (energy lock) and gaze, in turn creating the internal meditive, present moment, sense of awareness witin the body.
Each class will be done in traditional Sanskrit counting method. This class can help each practicioner to develop the memory of the ashtanga primary series and to experience the benefits of a flowing vinyasa based class, helping to burn away the internal impurities within body and consciousness, bringing about an inner sense of stillness.

Yin yoga comes from the concept of yin and yang, opposite and complementary principles in nature. Yin is the stable, unmoving, hidden aspect of things; yang is the changing, moving, revealing aspect. A Yin yoga class usually consists of a series of long-held, passive floor poses that mainly work the lower part of the body - the hips, pelvis, inner thighs, lower spine. These areas are especially rich in connective tissues. The poses are held for a longer period of time so that the passive release can take it's effect. A yin yoga class can be quite complimentary if your practicing an already "yang" based yoga practice like the ashtanga vinyasa sequence. Sometimes the body needs to feel that deeper sense of relaxation and A yin yoga class can bring about that sense of calm in the muscular skeletal system/nervous system and bring about psychological benefits that come through relaxation.
