New Year, New Change!

"Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself" Rumi

What I love about yoga is that it is available for all "bodies". When I first came across yoga, a good friend had just gave me a 30 day yoga practice book! I have to admit that it was a great gateway into opening my mind to a different perspective of movement as opposed to the western way of weights combined with contact sports as per my training regime at that time. I did have occasional back ache and tight hips and hamstrings. I though god I must give this yoga a try, apparently it's good for tight muscles!

I have to say, the movement did bring more of a sence of openness to throughout the body. However, I did notice that i felt a sence of mental clarity. Even though the movement was physical based, the combination of that and conscious breathing, (the book had described along with the images of a flexible person in asana (posture), helped to create some space between the thinking process. Rather than incessantly thinking about all that had happened in the day and how I was gonna get through whatever happened in my minds eye that next day, I was more present last say. I felt a bounce not only in my step but also in my heart! This little book planted the seed of how yoga might be something I'd like to delve a little deeper into.

It took a few more years for me to fully immerse myself into a daily yoga practice but the seed had been planted. It was a process of letting go. Letting go of bad habits and lifestyle choices. It came easier to let go when everything happened organically and not with will power. It took trying different styles of yoga for me to fully commit. When I found ashtanga yoga, I knew I found something I wanted to spend time giving my energies towards. Who knows, maybe this is what your calling is?!!
